TIPS & RESOURCES

Simple Steps to Stay Focused

1. Intention: Why Are You Fasting?

  • Know your "why": Are you fasting to grow closer to God, seek clarity, or pray for a specific need?
  • It’s not a transaction: Fasting isn’t about “getting something” from God. It’s about focusing on Him.
  • Think of fasting as space-making: By giving up something, you’re making more room for God in your heart and mind.

2. Sacrifice: What Will You Give Up?

  • Choose something meaningful: Fast something you rely on—like food, social media, or caffeine—not something easy.
  • Make it personal: Think about what might have too much influence in your life.
  • Example: If social media is a distraction, consider fasting it to regain focus on God.

3. The Crash: When It Gets Tough

  • Expect challenges: Around days 2-4, your body or mind may resist. You might feel tired, hungry, or distracted.
  • This is normal: It’s your body adjusting. Use these moments to pray or refocus on your purpose.
  • Tip: Stay hydrated and get enough rest if you’re feeling extra tired.

4. The Push: Stay the Course

  • The middle is the hardest: Once the excitement fades, temptations and doubts might creep in.
  • Remind yourself of truth:
    • “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
    • “If God is for me, who can be against me?”
  • One day at a time: Focus on today, and trust God to get you through tomorrow.

5. The Breakthrough: What God Might Do

  • It’s not just about results: The real breakthrough is a closer relationship with Jesus.
  • Focus on the process: Even if your fast doesn’t lead to a specific “answer,” know that God is working.
  • Key verse: “Seek first the kingdom of God, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).

6. Simple Tips for Fasting Success

  1. Fast with a friend: It helps to have support!
  2. Set yourself up for success: Clear out temptations (e.g., snacks, distracting apps).
  3. Don’t quit if you mess up: Just start again—it’s part of the journey.
  4. Write down your prayers: Keep track of what God shows you.
  5. Use hunger as a reminder: Every time you feel it, pray or read Scripture.
  6. Prepare in advance: Decide what you’ll fast and plan your schedule to make time for God.
  7. Rely on God’s Word: Scriptures like John 6:35 (“I am the bread of life”) can sustain you.
  8. Keep your purpose visible: Write it on a sticky note or make it your phone wallpaper.
  9. Join others in prayer: Community prayer can encourage you.
  10. Decide you will finish: Confidence comes when you commit.

What to Remember

Fasting is less about what you give up and more about what you gain—deeper connection with God. Keep it simple, keep it focused, and trust that God is with you every step of the way.
